In 2014, after a gruelling day at work, Karen and I found ourselves at a standstill on the N12 highway as most of South Africans find themselves in from time to time. As I approached the usual exit that led to my home, I wondered what the cause of the massive traffic jam could have been. It remained a mystery, prompting me to switch off my car’s ignition to prevent overheating.

The sea of halted vehicles was both astonishing and disconcerting. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t just a routine traffic snag,  it had the air of a major road blockage or a grave accident. Regrettably, the latter turned out to be true—an appalling motor vehicle collision that claimed the lives of two young women in an Opel Corsa.

Unaware of the tragic details at that stage, it was only a few days later that I learned about the horrifying circumstances whilst reading an article in the local newspaper. The two women had collided with the back of a container truck, finding themselves trapped in their vehicle. Reports from the local newspaper revealed that they had been pinned inside for a considerable time before flames erupted. The absence of a fire extinguisher among the onlookers meant the flames gradually consumed their vehicle.

The shock I felt was indescribable. Among the hundreds of immobilized cars, not a single person possessed a fire extinguisher that could have been utilized to quell the flames in their initial stages. Such a tool amongst others could have brought precious time for emergency services to arrive and potentially save those two young lives. Reflecting on this, I was disheartened by my own lack of emergency and safety items in my car that could have made a difference that day if I was there at the exact location at the time.

Prompted by this revelation, I began asking friends and family members who frequently traversed our roads about their preparedness for emergencies and if they had any emergency and safety products in their vehicles. Unfortunately, the resounding answer was “NO.” This realization fueled my determination to create a solution— We very quickly designed, manufactured, packed and stocked our very first SafeguardSA Emergency Bag, a compact bag designed to snugly fit in a car and contain essential items. These items were not only geared towards saving lives in critical situations but also addressing common roadside issues and unforeseen circumstances.  We never leave home without it.

Of course these unforeseen circumstances are not only evident in our cars or on the roads, but also in our homes or when we are in the outdoors. For this reason we extended our model to manufacture well thought out and lifesaving emergency and safety bags for your home or for when you are in the outdoors.
